Loukoumades – Mini Greek Doughnuts

These are so good, they’re little gold mini treasures and you may have to fight your children just to get even one.  Crunchy on the top, soft and spongy inside, dusted with cinnamon and dipped in sweet honey sirup – so yummy. Our youngest daughter’s eyes lit up when she tried the first one.

Recipe type: Dessert
Serves: 4+

For the dough
  • 1½ tablespoons of quick yeast
  • ½ cup of lukewarm water
  • 2¼ cups of flour
  • ¼ teaspoons of salt
  • cinnamon and icing sugar to dust
  • vegetable oil for frying
For the dipping sauce
  • ½ cup of Kirkland Grade A honey
  • ¾ cup of sugar
  • ½ cup of water

  1. Mix the flour and salt together and then set aside.
  2. Dissolve the yeast in water and let it stand for 10 minutes.
  3. In a big bowl mix together the yeast with the flour (adding more water or flour if necessary) until you achieve a sticky but smooth dough.
  4. Cover with kitchen towel and let it sit in a warm place until it doubles in size. (about an hour)
  5. Pour the honey, water and a sugar into a small pot and bring to a boil over medium high heat. Once it starts boiling lower the temperature and simmer for 5 minutes. Set aside.
  6. When the dough has doubled in size, take it out of the bowl and form small balls about the size of a raspberry.
  7. In a small to medium sized pot, add about 1 inch worth of oil to it and heat over high heat. Fry the donuts in batches until golden, turning every few seconds.
  8. Drain each on a paper towel and then dust with icing sugar and cinnamon.
  9. Serve with the honey dipping sauce.
