Bacon Liver Dog Treats

Do you wonder if the treats we give our four legged friends are good for them? It seems the ingredients are more about low cost instead of what is healthy for the dog. Even when I started searching for recipes to make some treats for my Chesapeake, I was shocked how many were full of sugar and stuff that isn’t the best for dogs. So I improvised and came up with one based on bacon and liver, which is surprising because the smell of liver makes me gag! But Maya drools like crazy for these treats!

Ingredients
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup liver, chopped (veal, chicken etc)
  • ½ cup bacon, chopped (make use of the fat mostly)
  • ½ cup carrot, shredded
  • ½ cup chicken/beef broth (preferably with no salt)
  • 2½ cups oat flour or quick oats
  • 1 cup flour

Instructions
  1. Fry the bacon in a pan.
  2. Take the bacon, including fat, and place it along with the liver and carrot in a food processor. Blend.
  3. Pour this mixture into a large bowl and add the oat flour, and mix together. If it is too sticky add more regular flour until a smooth dough consistency is achieved.
  4. Pre-heat oven to 360F
  5. Cut the dough into 4 quarters and on a flour dusted surface, one quarter at a time, roll the dough out until it is about ¼” thick.
  6. Using a cookie cutter or with a knife, cut cookies out of the dough.
  7. Place the cookies on a baking pan that has been coated with parchment paper and bake for 20 minutes or until slightly browned and cooked through.
  8. Remove from the oven and allow to cool.
